Normal Hair Loss

We natural shed hair and lose about 50-100 hairs per day and naturally new hairs grow to replace each hair that was shed. However there are many factors that can affect healthy hair from stress, sleeping habits, genetic predisposition, nutrition and your overall health.

Medically Induced Hair Loss

Each person’s hair responds differently to medical treatment especially
with chemotherapy or radiation. But after hair loss which can start a
few weeks after your first treatment you will find hair growing back
around one month after your last treatment, your hair typically returns
to its original condition and color though at first the color and texture
will be slightly different.

Always seek out the advice of your physician, nurse or oncologist for medical guidance first.

In the early stages you may consider shaving one’s head to avoid the discomfort of shedding hair. Another option is attaining a full wig however seek out a consultant prior to your hair loss so the consultant can match the wig closest to your natural hair and style. Consider synthetic hair if you
need a wig for a year or so otherwise a human hair wig may be better for
longer periods. You can ask for hand tied or machine made wigs.

Alopecia

Alopecia is hair loss on the scalp that affects males and females at any
age but is not a life threatening issue. The three types are:

  1. Universalis where the entire body has hair loss including your scalp
  2. Totalis where there is full scalp hair loss which typically started
    off as areata
  3. Areata, the most common is small, round and smooth bald areas on the scalp

Trichotillomania

This noticeable hair loss condition is the repetitive pulling out of
one’s own hair.

Trichotillomania affects 2-3% of all people with hair loss, making it a fairly common condition. Trichotillomania can affect both children and adults although the mean age of first onset is 13 years. Both boys and girls are affected in childhood but the adult version of trichotillomania almost always affects women (Jaspers, 1996).

Male Pattern Hair Loss

(Androgenetic Hair Loss)

Males typically see this start around their mid-thirties and will find
their hair to look finer and feel brittle on the top and crown. The hair
loss has a variation of shapes and sizes and the Norwood Chart has seven
common types:

1.

minimal recession that can be resolved with a change of hairstyle to provide coverage

2.

A “U” shape front hairline with minimal recession which can be covered with a change in hairstyle

3.

A more noticeable recession that is difficult to cover and seeking a dermatologist for diagnostic clarification and treatment (topical
solution or a micro-graft transplant surgery) is recommended

4.

is the same as type 3 above along with thinning around the crown and
hair replacement would now be an appropriate option

5.

Considerable hair loss in front and crown and so either a cosmetic hair system or micro-graft transplant surgeries are optimal solutions

6.

The recession is more extreme and fully connects with the hair loss in the crown and so either a cosmetic hair systems or micro-graft transplant surgeries are optimal solutions

7.

Severe hair loss of the entire head and either a cosmetic hair systems or micro-graft transplant surgeries are optimal solutions. However the surgery is possible only if there is enough hair growth at the back of one’s head which can only be determined by a professional transplant clinic.

Female Pattern Hair Loss

(Androgenetic Hair Loss)

Hair loss typically starts around the age of 30 for females and is more
apparent after menopause. Females typically see gradual overall thinning
starting at the top of the head rather than full hair loss.
